Reviews:
Dear Alex,
Thank you for a very wonderful and unexpected Sunday of artistic expression. I thought your guidance was direct, easy to follow, concise, intuitive, and effective. There was a beginning (surprise, introduction, and instruction), middle (exercises, learning, critique, etc.), and an end (a longer exercise, reflection, and come-down). Thank you also for sharing your beautiful work with us. It was helpful to see it at the end of our day together as my perceptions and observations of your work did not interfere with the learning process. In other words, it was cool to start from a blank slate.
It was so nice to return to the observer's state of being... noticing how things are, what elements in the visual experience separate objects from one another, noticing how these aspects are also united in a continuous flow, and also noticing how they feel-- thus somehow being informed by this feeling whilst translating from body- to mind- to hand- to paper. And it was a great opportunity to approach drawing in the beginner's mind, without feeling judged or criticized.
Some things I learned about myself:
- I learned that I rely heavily on my words to convey meaning, so it was refreshing to tap into a different creative medium.
- I very much enjoy being challenged (in a good way) for the purpose of gentle and fun learning and growth.
- I learned about leadership, partnership, unity and their importance in relationships and all areas of life (in this case art) as per your insights and interpretation of some of our 3-minute pieces.
- I was reminded again that a being's creative expression very much shows insight into what is happening in his or her psyche (skill and technique aside). I saw that I crave unity and cohesion in the landscape of my life but do not always see how to make all the pieces blend harmoniously, but in some ways I do and that feels good to acknowledge.
- I also noticed that I did not feel any competition with Ryan, but rather love, appreciation, compassion, and support for him. I felt extreme competition with myself and my ideas of "good" and the desire to be better. Sometimes "better" is being in a state of contentment and acceptance of what-is and feeling a sense of striving from an empowered perspective rather than a lack-based perspective.
It was exciting to see some progress in myself and my partner in the few hours we spent out there.
I also was reminded about the importance of trying new things, trust, and gratitude in a partnership.
